UUC hosts several community support groups: NRV Trans* Support, NAMI NRV Family & Friends, NAMI NRV Connections, Parent Bereavement, and Caregivers. For more information about each group, see below.
NRV Trans* Support
NRV Trans* Support is a peer-led organization whose mission is to offer support, resources, and social activities to all transgender and gender non-conforming individuals in the New River Valley in a safe, anonymous and affirming environment. To learn more about NRV Trans* Support, visit their website at http://nrvtranssupport.com/. For more information and the locations of the meetings, email firstname.lastname@example.org.
Two different support groups meet monthly, and both groups are sponsored by UUC:
The Adult Group meets on the 2nd & 4th Thursdays of each month from 7-8:30 PM and welcomes all adults who identify under the trans umbrella or are questioning their gender.
The Youth & Families Group meets on the 4th Tuesday of each month from 7-8:30 PM and is for anyone under 18 that falls under the trans umbrella, whether they have started their transition or are just questioning their gender. The group provides resources, advice, and support for children and their families. Parents are welcome with or without their children.
NAMI NRV Support Groups
Two different NAMI NRV (National Alliance on Mental Illness) support groups meet monthly, both from 6-7:30 PM. NAMI NRV is an affiliate of the Virginia Chapter of NAMI. All are welcome to attend either group. For more information, contact Margo.
The NAMI Connections Support Group meets on the 3rd Monday of each month and is for persons with a mental illness.
The NAMI Family & Friends Support Group meets on the 3rd Wednesday of each month and is for friends and families of persons with a mental illness.
Listen to some facts about Mental Illness, the myths, and a Personal Story of a Mental Illness journey from despair to hope.
Parent Bereavement Support Group
This is a support group for bereaved parents and grandparents who have lost an adult or adolescent child. Participants come together once a month on 2nd Mondays from 6-7 PM to listen, to share stories of loss and love, and to help one another on their journeys. For more info, contact Katherine or Lisa.
Caregivers Support Group
This is a support group for those who are caring for a loved one to provide a place to share and discuss the challenges faced, address the importance of self-care, and explore the fears that can be an integral part of the care giving role. Participants meet on the 2nd Tuesday of each month at 7 PM. For more information, contact Rev. Pam Philips. If you wish to attend but require somebody to provide respite care, please let us know.
