Voting Rights
The purpose of the voting rights team, formed in January 2023, is to promote and encourage voting by members of our congregation as well as the larger community. This goal stems from our 5th UU principle: “The right of conscience and the use of the democratic process within our congregations and in society at large.”
The UUA has also identified voting as a major focus, noting that “directly or indirectly, the issues that many of us care about are part of every election and every ballot.”
Our 5th principle calls us to .
To live into our 5th UU principle, the voting rights team focuses on:
- Tracking legislation before the Virginia General Assembly and contacting legislators to request their support of bills favorable to inclusive voting;
- Keeping our congregation informed
- Collaborating with other community organizations that promote voting, such as the Montgomery County League of Women Voters and the Montgomery-Radford-Floyd Branch of the NAACP.
