Reproductive Justice
Purpose
The purpose of the Reproductive Justice Team, formed in January 2023, is to promote reproductive justice, defined by SisterSong as “the human right to maintain personal bodily autonomy, have children, not have children, and parent the children we have in safe and sustainable communities.”
According to the UUA, our first UU Principle, the inherent worth and dignity of every person, “includes a belief in the sacredness of all bodies, and the importance of self-determination and human agency. As part of a liberatory Reproductive Justice movement, we affirm our commitment to building a world in which all people are able to make choices about their bodies, their health, and their families within safe, thriving communities.”In keeping with our purpose, the Reproductive Justice Team focuses on:
- Legislation before the Virginia General Assembly, as well as federal legislation, and advocating for bills conducive to reproductive justice;
- Educating ourselves–through study and guest speakers–and our congregation–through a variety of activities such as sponsoring a social justice film at UUC (The Janes) and sending out emails to our PublicWitness listserv;
- Collaborating with and supporting other community organizations that support reproductive justice.
How to get involved:
Join us as we share ideas about ways that we can work together for reproductive justice. We welcome ideas, suggestions and participation from all congregants, whether the involvement is a one time activity or ongoing participation. For more information or to join the team, contact Sara.
